Arena Smart Cap wins prestigious ADI Design Index award

Tolentino, 15 October, 2012 – Global waterwear brand Arena’s innovative Smart Cap has earned its second prestigious design accolade in being selected for the 2012 edition of the ADI Design Index, the annual publication of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (Association for Industrial Design). Founded in 1956, ADI is acknowledged as the most representative and authoritative organization for Italian design, and today boasts 1,300 members from a broad spectrum of the design, manufacturing, publishing, and educational fraternities.

The ADI Design Index is an annual publication containing the best of realized Italian design (i.e. designs that have been put into production) based on the product’s originality, functional and typological innovation, production processes adopted, materials used, and the formal synthesis of all its component aspects. Selection for the publication is made by the ADI Design Permanent Observatory consisting of hundreds of experts operating through three primary channels – Territorial Commissions, Thematic Commissions, and the Final Selection Committee. Particular emphasis is paid to products that express a respect for the environment, provide public and social value, demonstrate attention to product usability, and illustrate the concept of a “design for all”.

The Arena Smart Cap features a revolutionary construction with an inner band and an outer cap, and is designed specifically for swimmers with long hair. The inner band keeps hair in place while pulling the cap on, obviating the need for elastic bands or clips, while simplifying the ergonomics of the process and speeding it up as a result. In addition to its functional properties, the cap is designed with Arena’s customary Italian flair, adding an element of style to its innovative qualities. The products selected for the 2011, 2012, and 2013 ADI Design Index publications will subsequently be submitted to an International Jury for the XXIII Premio Compasso d'Oro ADI (23rd ADI Golden Compass Award). Golden Compass winners become part of the Historical Collection, a unique legacy safeguarded by ADI consisting of around 2,000 products dating back to 1954. Its importance has been recognized by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, who declared it a "national heritage of outstanding artistic and historic interest." The 2012 Design Index products are also eligible for the annual Premio dei Premi per l’Innovazione (Innovation Awards Prize) sponsored by the Italian President, where three products exhibiting particular innovative qualities are recognized.

The 2012 ADI Design Index was officially announced at a press conference on October 2nd, followed by a formal unveiling in the evening at Milan’s Triennale Design Museum.
