Powerskin 2012 - Chapter 2 The revolution...

It was around 2008 that competitive swimming went through another significant change, with the development of non-textile suits. Plastic coatings now gave swimmers an added advantage, improving form drag, making the body more compact, and ultimately making the swimmer faster.

In this new environment, Arena’s scientific network – with Innovia Technology from Cambridge playing a key role – created a truly ground-breaking innovation. The POWERSKIN X-Glide was a multi-layered full body suit with a special coating, increased buoyancy, and reduced drag even more than previous swimsuits.

The X-Glide design was so revolutionary that it was named among Time Magazine’s 50 Best Inventions of 2009.
